Letters from Dills


 


Harrison Dills wrote two letters to his congressman, Abraham Lincoln in 1849. He was active in his community but was interested in the Postmaster position. Lincoln's friend, Abraham Jonas, was chosen for the position which he executed until his death. His wife held the position briefly until Harrison assumed the responsibilities in 1865, serving one term. In 1864, Dills was a delegate in the re-election of President Lincoln who was shot early in his second term.

In January 1868, a Quincy Herald journalist wrote: "Having failed to fasten negro suffrage on Northern States, they strive constantly to force it on the South. Their difficulty is in determining upon a plan which shall assure their success. They deliberately overturned the work inaugurated by Lincoln, sanctioned by Grant, and carried on by Johnson, and substituted the infamous, tyrannical and revolutionary system of military governments now in operation..."
